The very long drive
Today started very early with a drive of 600 miles ahead of us - an eleven hour journey through Wyoming and into Montana along the line of the mighty Rocky Mountains. You can’t go that far back home, so it was impressive to see quite so much land (and to know there was so much more in this country!) Wyoming is vast and empty, population only around 500,000 and looking just like every cowboy film you’ve ever seen. Vast prairies with cattle, antelope and bison. And two camels for completely unknown reasons.
Fun Wyoming fact - one of the first places to give women the vote. Hurrah Wyoming!
Several stops along the way for refreshments and leg stretches, and a cultural stop to the site of the battle of Little Bighorn and Custer’s Last Stand. To us this is the stuff of legend and myth so it was striking to realise it was real and had happened on this spot. It was an impressive and sad place with monuments to the dead of both sides, the US army and the combined Indian tribes who won that day - but not for much longer.
Then on through beautiful landscape to Katie’s home. They are lucky enough to look out at these mountains every day.
Montana is known as the ‘Big Sky’ state and we can see why. It really is big, somehow. Not so warm though! Tomorrow we’re off to Yellowstone and the forecast is for chilly weather. We’re expecting spectacular anyway however! And tomorrow night we are promised elk steaks. Astounding.
