Here we are in Colorado. It was a long journey, but not without its treats.

It was made somewhat longer by Denver airport closing ‘indefinitely’ by thunderstorms as we approached. Undaunted, our pilot told us we were diverting to Colorado Springs where we would have to stay on the plane till Denver reopened. And then re-fuel. We tried not to be alarmed and settled down for another 30 minute flight. The pilot assured us this was “the 100% safe option”. After about 20 minutes he came back on to tell us we had turned around and were heading back to Denver as it had reopened and we would not really have wanted to land at Colorado Springs as it was so small! And apparently we had enough fuel after all.

I am glad to say we landed without any more incident, negotiated our way through passport control (fully automated) and met Joe and Genevieve about an hour late. We then drove about an hour to their house and stayed up till 10.30 which was 24.5 hrs after we got up in. Did we sleep? Er, yes.

First day in Fort Collins was a leisurely affair with plenty of coffee and chat, a short walk, cut shorter by the return of the rains, our first American lunch in a while and Pa tried out a bison burger (delicious, he smiled) and seeing Riley and newly married Erin.  All in all a fine start and now we are re-packing for our trip to Wyoming and Montana. Yellowstone and Little Big Horn are in the plans so expect interesting pictures.

In the meantime make do with three women sheltering under a tree in the Colorado rain...
